Gas-Liquid Steam Separator Sizing

99% removal of entrained droplets and particles larger than 10 microns. Enter the lowest operating pressure and the maximum steam weight flow. For air and other gases, use the gas-liquid sizing tool.

Design criteria

Size on the lowest pressure and the highest weight flow. Quality stays at 95% unless you know it.

314.7 PSIA
PSIG

Lowest pressure at which you need maximum removal efficiency. If you were given PSIA, subtract 14.7.

lb/hr

Total weight flow of steam and liquid.

%

Optional. If you do not know it, use 95.

Recommended 8 in

Use a size equal to or larger than the calculated size. Oversizing the body and attaching smaller connections to match the pipe is common. Never reduce the line to fit a separator, and do not install an element smaller than the pipeline.

Calculated size

  • Receiver size is within 0.1 in of 8 in. Consider 10 in for a receiver design.

Sizing-flow ratio for the chosen size. Actual ΔP uses (weight flow ÷ maximum capacity)² × rated ΔP. Inlet moisture is 2,000 lb/hr (5.0% of weight flow). Type 31L / L1 is the smallest style that covers that liquid load in this body.

Condensate removal by design

Rates are a percent of the chosen size’s maximum capacity, used to size the drain trap and to confirm the separator can take the entrained liquid. GPS is an approximate slug rate. Removal is 99% of droplets larger than 10 microns when the body is large enough for that style.

How the vortex works

The mixture is spun so droplets and particles larger than 10 microns reach the wall. Dry steam leaves through the discharge. A containment plate keeps the vortex from re-entraining the pooled condensate. There are no moving parts and nothing to service.

Infinite turndown

Efficiency holds at the low velocities of startup and shutdown. These centrifugal designs are not limited to a narrow flow band. Size them on the minimum pressure and the maximum mass flow.

Steam service

Cast iron, carbon steel, stainless, and the alloys common in chemical plants and refineries. Type T cast-iron bodies are used on steam, and the ST includes an integral float drain trap. Traps still belong on the piping; the separator removes droplets that a trap on the main never sees.

Where they are used

Turbine inlets, jacketed vessels, autoclaves, heating coils, vulcanizing, corrugators, and steam onto a process or a food surface. Horizontal, vertical-down, and vertical-up paths are covered by different models — match the orientation in the removal table.

Unit conversions

Same factors as the steam sheet. Liquid LPM, LPH, and GPM convert as water mass flow, not as steam volume. PSI results can be sent straight into the pressure or flow fields.
